when
we are in school we are taught that physics is an inquiry to know about
the natural phenomena. and the lessons we are taught are also the same.
When we were in fourth grade most of us wanted to be astronaut. Also
the science book of small classes are mostly filled with the story of
causation of ellipse, telescope, about solar system, about the life of
Galielo, how he was kept in jail when he said that sun is the center of
solar system.
The
biggest irony is that we are told only those things which is known for
200 years. It is a good thing because you can not tell anyone about that
thing which is not true so in school you can not expect that you will
be taught about Higgs-Boson particle or the ongoing research in
astronomy. But the problem is that we are not told about even day to day
life phenomena also. And this thing i realized recently when i came to
know that there is no explanation for "why full moon appears larger at
horizon?" Now think about this have you ever thought about this ever
that why full moon appears larger at horizon? If i ask anyone even
though he might be not knowing he will try to explain this phenomenon.
But the truth is that he does not know that scientists are still trying
to find out the explanation for this. On the same hand if you ask anyone
why sun appears red on horizon he will surely explain you this
phenomenon. why? Because he was taught in school about the red color of
sun at horizon but he was not taught about bigger size of full moon at
horizon.
The
point which i am trying to make here is not that whether we have
correct explanation for some physical phenomenon or not but whether we
have curiosity to know something or not. As Albert Einstein once said " i have no special talent, i am only passionately curious." and
to be curious we need to think about things outside of our course,
think about things which are not being taught but we just observe around
us.
I
do not know if you are curious or not but i am curious to know- why sun
appears to be a perfect circle during sunrise or during sunset, though
being made up of gas it should not have such a perfect shape of circle.
P.S. If you want to know about the phenomena of moon you can watch the video:Ted ed video
