Last night I was watching news and there was news about the protest of Jalikat. The people protesting were saying that the ban imposed was the foreign imposed. The idea was brought from west and government was trying to supress their culture. One boy even said that the history of Tamil culture went back to 3600 b.c. Surely archeology do not know what was the civilization in Tamilnadu in 3600 b.c. but the guy surely had some false pride about the idea of his culture and this is where the problem lies.
The guy can surely be forgiven if he has no strong sense of history and how the culture evolves over time. But sometimes politicians use the guise of culture to create a false pride by distorting the facts. Especially in Tamilnadu when the rage against north India has been present since the time of freedom struggle. During the non cooperation movement when Gandhi called to boycott the council election Tamilnadu, then known as the Madras presidency was the only presidency which participated in the election and Justice party won most of the election. The lurking fear among them during that time was also that the Congress was party dominated by upper caste, surely it was, but it was just a pretext to save the Dravidian from dominance of Brahamans. Sometimes they went to extent to claim Ravana as hero because he belonged to Dravidian country.
Surely many times the fear of insecurity is on unfounded basis especially the fear of encroachment of one culture by another culture. Culture is always an assimilation which keeps on evolving when it interacts with other cultures. The same Tamil country has India biggest temple- Brihadeshwar temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. And Nehru was the biggest opponent when the idea of making Hindi as national language became a controversial issue in 1960s.
The idea of banning Jalikat has not been taken by central government it's decision of supreme court to ban it according to prevention of cruelty against animal act. Surely people find it difficult to leave their so called "custom" just by some order from authority but they should also keep in mind that Sati was a part of our custom which slowly faded from our society because of some order from imperial government.

ReplyDeleteu must have read about khonda uprising, human sacrifice has long been prevalent in our country and British government had to face agitation for banning it.so people protesting against the jallikattu ban is understandable.
